Compulsory school attendance will resume on January 4, 2024

The compulsory school attendance for primary school children from Grindavík to attend school will resume on January 4, 2024. An exception was made from the compulsory education laws due to the evacuation in Grindavík.

Grindavík Primary School will continue to operate four school units with in other schools in the capital area and will continue with the same format until it becomes possible to relocate the operations back to Grindavík. Children will also be able to continue attending school where they currently reside.

Despite the fact that the children are now scattered throughout the country, the school enrollment rate for primary school children from Grindavík is around 95%. Roughly half of these children attend the school in the school units run by of Grindavík Primary School, which operates in four locations in Reykjavík. School transportation services are provided for children from Southern Iceland, the Southern Peninsula, and neighboring communities of Reykjavík, allowing them to attend school in the four school units run by Grindavík Primary School. Currently, the children from Grindavík attend a total of 65 schools in 28 communities across the country.
